Bordsen Appointed to Commission on Children, Youth PDF Print E-mail

RALEIGH – Representative Alice Bordsen (D-Alamance) was recently appointed co-chair to the Legislative Commission on Children and Youth. This Commission is statutorily created in order make recommendations to the General Assembly to assist families in need.

“The Commission on Children and Youth will offer a place to plan greater collaboration among State and local agencies delivering services to children, youth, and families,” Bordsen said. “The goal is to make better use of our public dollars, streamline our service delivery, and eliminate duplication of services to ensure our children are healthier and better-educated.”

The appointment is a natural one for Bordsen; she has worked on issues involving children and youth since her first election to the General Assembly in 2003. As a freshman legislator, Bordsen pushed to get Kaitlyn's Law passed ( S.L. 2003-406 ) which prohibits unauthorized administration of medications by child care facilities. Bordsen also has worked on issues of juvenile justice, filing bills to help troubled youth and supporting funding for the Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention as well as local Juvenile Crime Prevention Councils. Bordsen would like to have a common arena for studying all services for youth and children.

“There must be common sharing of responsibility and accountability in these services,” Bordsen said. “This Commission will look to coordinate efforts through a more horizontal system of care in order to best help our children and strengthen our families in North Carolina .”

The Legislative Commission on Children and Youth is made up of House and Senate Members as well as public members. Bordsen hopes to hold two organizational meetings before the General Assembly reconvenes on May 13.
